Before you start practicing any songs or pieces your instructor has assigned, begin with these gentle warmups. Take your time and don’t rush this important step in your daily practice routine. Remember that it takes most people anywhere from 30 minutes to a full hour before their voice is primed and performance-ready. 1. Diaphragm Breathing
You need a steady flow of air to increase your range and volume while enhancing your musical phrasing. To improve your breath support, engage your core, and activate your diaphragm with some simple breathing exercises. Take deep breaths, working on expanding your abdomen rather than raising your shoulders. Hold for five seconds, then release slowly on a hiss, contracting your abdomen to push out any air that remains at the end. 2. Lip Trills

After you hit the top of your range, slide back down to the bottom, following the previous instructions in reverse. Repeat several times, striving to sing a little lower and a little higher each time.
Different vowel formations can lead to varying tonalities when you sing. Starting on a bright “zee” vowel activates the muscles towards the face’s front, helping with pitch and producing a clear sound. Shifting to the darker “aw’ vowel activates more muscles towards the back of the throat, resulting in a warmer tone. For this exercise, sing an arpeggio starting with “zee” on the tonic note. Once you reach the next octave, switch to “aw” as you return to your starting note. Repeat in half-step intervals moving up or down in range.
5. “Mee, May, Maw, Moh, Moo”
