Matthew Judson is a drummer, composer, and instructor born in Evanston IL, based in Austin TX. At age nine, Matthew built his own tupperware drum set, was enrolled in piano lessons, and joined the elementary band as a percussionist (eventually owning real drums!). In high school, he played in all of the ensembles, attended state as an orchestral percussionist, and thanks to his exceptional band director, was heavily influenced by jazz music history.
Matthew began teaching music at age seventeen, and over the past ten years has acquired drum set students of all ages as well as beginner piano students. Since then, he has earned a BFA in Jazz Studies/Percussion Performance from Northern Illinois University, co-produced studio albums with several bands, established himself as a studio recording musician, produced works as a solo electro-acoustic artist and composer, played drums in the orchestra aboard a luxury cruise liner, and currently accompanies modern dance classes at University of Texas at Austin.
He performs regularly around the Austin area as a solo artist/collaborator by the name “Math” Judson, and with his flagship groups, The Pride and Starved Rock. A major aspect of his teaching style is “Music begat theory.” In other words, a musical connection is more important than technical abilities. Matthew utilizes his multi-instrumentalism to jam along with students in order for them to get a feel for playing in a live group setting. His in-depth curriculum (soon to be released in print, entitled ‘A Percussive Approach’) sparks growth and development on the drum set while reaching out to all aspects within the percussive realm and beyond, including piano, electronic music and the recording arts.
