So, you’ve been taking group music lessons with a focus on piano playing for a while now, or maybe you’ve been teaching yourself from the comfort of your home. Whatever the case may be, your time to shine is approaching. You have a piano recital coming up and you are extremely anxious. Unfortunately, this anxiety could ruin your entire performance and keep you from showing the world just how beautiful of music you can make.

Are You Dealing with Anxiety?

Not sure if you are anxious? Here are a few signs to look for:

  • Feelings of unease
  • Dry mouth
  • Problems speaking
  • Trembling limbs and/or voice
  • Cold, sweat hands
  • Increased heart rate
  • Irritability

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, just know that you’re not alone. You aren’t the first person, nor will you be the last, to get the jitters before a piano recital. Secondly, it is important that you know how to take control of your nerves.

5 Ways to Calm Your Stage Fright

  1. Warm Your Fingers – When you become stressed, your body’s fight-or-flight response is triggered. This takes heat and blood from your limbs and sends them to your core, while also sending signals to your brain that your body is in distress. To switch the signal and decrease distress, warm up your fingers. This will enhance your feeling of safety while also evoking a sense of calmness. A great way to warm up your fingers is by wrapping your hands around a warm cup of black tea (which has been shown to help lower cortisol levels).
  2. Call a Friend – Your best friend has been there for you through thick and thin, and the day of your piano recital is going to be no different. Whether you need some support, a pick-me-up or a laugh, your friend can give it to you. Numerous scientific studies have shown that social interaction has the ability to decrease stress and increase relaxation, which will calm you down and allow you to feel more confident.
  3. Exercise a Bit – When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. These endorphins work to induce calmness throughout the body and mind. It doesn’t have to be a lot. You can exercise for 10 or 15 minutes and get enough out of it to calm down.
  4. Reduce Clutter – If your surrounding environment is cluttered and unorganized, it is going to have a direct impact on your mental stability. Physical clutter essentially equates to mental clutter. Reduce any physical clutter around you so that you can feel calmer and in control thanks to a more organized visual field.
  5. Get Quality Sleep – The night before a big event, like a piano recital, you have to make sure that you get an adequate amount of sleep. More than the amount of sleep, you also need to ensure that you get quality sleep. When you don’t get enough restful sleep, you will feel fatigued and be cranky. Try to get seven to nine hours of quality sleep for several nights leading up to your piano recital.

Don’t allow your nerves to take away from the music that you want to play for the audience. Eliminate your piano recital jitters with the aforementioned tips so that you can produce a beautiful set.
